When Z and I got engaged back in 2016, I knew that I wanted a traditional registry, with kitchen and home items to help us build our new home. As someone who loves to cook and host friends for meals, I was looking forward to supplementing our basics that we had purchased right out of school when we had very little money since I was between jobs. Before our wedding, pretty much everything we owned in our kitchen was from Ikea, with the rare exceptions of gifts from our parents.
Setting up our registries at Williams Sonoma, Gump’s, and Amazon was one of my favorite wedding tasks to do. I remember spending hours at Gump’s with both my dad and Z’s mom, looking at different china patterns.
As excited as I was (and still am!) about the fine china, there are so many items on our registry that surprised me by how much I love and use them now. Below are some of my dark-horse favorites from our registry that Z and I gravitate towards and use everyday.
Aplico Soup Bowls
When we unpacked these Williams Sonoma soup bowls, Z and I joked about how we would rarely use these shallow bowls. Little did we realize these plate-bowls (as we call them) would become our go-to vehicle for pasta, soups, rice bowls, and salads! Yes, you can use them as intended for a gazpacho (seen below!) or chicken soup, but I like them the best for salads piled high with items that I worry might fall off of a plate.
When we registered for a Vitamix, I honestly added it because it seemed like a “traditional” wedding item. It took me a few months to actually unwrap it from the box, and it wasn’t until this summer that I started using the Vitamix in earnest.
I used it on a whim to make a smoothie when I was annoyed/frustrated with our NutriBullet. The Vitamix impressed me by how smooth my drink was and how easy it was to clean! I hated cleaning the NutriBullet blade, and the Vitamix’s self-cleaning setting made me a total convert.
I reach for it now for my daily smoothie, but also soups, vinaigrettes, and pestos.
Z added a robovac to our registry, and I made fun of him for adding it to our registry. At the time, it seemed rather silly and superfluous given that we had registered for two other vacuums.
After using the Eufy Robovac twice a week for a month though, I saw the appeal! It’s a relatively hands-off way of doing a quick clean. We still use a regular vacuum once a week, but the Eufy is great for those times when pulling out the full vacuum seems a bit much, and I especially love it for entertaining. I inevitable get food on the floor while I’m cooking, so we’ll use the Eufy in the 15 minutes or so before guests arrive for dinner.
Shun Knife Set
While I instinctively knew that knife quality was important, I didn’t realize how big of an impact an upgraded knife set would make. I started using our new knives once we moved to Chicago, and with the first slice I could immediately tell a difference. Our Shun knife set from Williams Sonoma sits on the counter in easy reach for all the slicing and dicing that happens in our kitchen.
If you are considering registering for a knife set, I recommend registering each individual knife separately since it makes for a more affordable gift for guests.
